Pembrokeshire County Swimming (PCS) is a partnership between Pembrokeshire Council and the county’s six competitive swimming clubs – ourselves; Haverfordwest Seals; Pembroke & District; Tenby Dolphins; Milford Tigers; and Preseli Panthers. It provides talented young swimmers with a recognised coaching pathway through to national and international level competitions.
A new selection policy for the 2018/19 season has now been published. Some changes have been made to the structure of the squads (the Jnr and Snr Academies have been combined and age bands have slightly altered for most squads) and most importantly some changes were made to the actual selection criterias for each squad. There is now one selection document for all squads.
We will update the section below to reflect changes in the selection policy in due course and we will also upload a version of the ‘Winning Behaviours’ policy to which the selection criteria refers to asap.
Junior and Senior Academy
For most swimmers, their first experience of the county squad will be as part of the Academy. The Junior Academy is aimed at younger swimmers, aged 9 and 10, who are taking their first step onto the county swimming ladder. Swimmers are invited to training camps every few months, where they are given a mix of land training in the gym, key information on nutrition and goal-setting, plus swim coaching on specific skills, such as starts and turns.
The next step up is the Senior Academy, which is for those aged 11 and 12. This squad trains every Saturday morning, 6.40 to 9.30, at Haverfordwest L.C. Training is split between pool and gym.

The Junior National Squad selects a maximum of 14 swimmers aged 11 and under and 12. This squad trains at Haverfordwest L.C. every Tuesday 05.40am – 07.40am, Wednesday 16.50pm – 19.40pm, and every Saturday 06.40am – 10.00am. In addition to this training, members of the Junior National Squad are expected to continue with their regular programme at their parent club.
These promising younger swimmers are being prepared for elevation to the county’s performance squads.

County coaches select a maximum of 12 swimmers, aged 12 and under, 13 and 14, for the National Squad. Swimmers must achieve demanding times to be selected. This is the first squad to have all training based at Haverfordwest L.C.

National Performance Squad
The National Performance Squad is the top of the county swimming ladder. Swimmers in this squad are prepared to compete at national and international level.
A maximum of 10 swimmers, aged 14 and under to 17+, are selected for this squad. National Performance Squad training is based at Haverfordwest L.C.
